Susan Blackmore on Having an Open Mind

16 July 2008 | 11:39 am

[old] Why I Have Given Up by Susan Blackmore (2001) from Skeptical Odysseys: Personal Accounts by the World’s Leading Paranormal Inquirers, edited by Paul Kurtz:

I am sick of being told that I do not have a open mind. Long ago I wrote about the difficulty of having a truly open mind--or even knowing what this means. I called it 'the elusive open mind' (Blackmore 1987) because I know, after years and years of struggling with competing beliefs, searching for evidence, and looking deep into my own motivations and fears, that having an open mind is not easy. To me an open mind means this--that you are prepared to change your mind if the evidence suggests you should. This sounds simple, but is not. It is a balancing act between having a mind so open that it changes every time the wind blows, and so closed that impossible standards of evidence are required to change it. It is a world away from the kind of 'open mind' that critics love to flaunt--the kind that really means 'If you agree with me you have an open mind--if you agree with scientists you don’t'.

Carol Ann Duffy and Sympathetic Co-Experiencing

13 July 2008 | 11:03 pm

[old] In 'Duffy, Eliot, and Impersonality' (2003) Neil Roberts says that one of Carol Ann Duffy's most popular poems is a 'prime example of what [Mikhail] Bakhtin calls sympathetic co-experiencing':

Sympathetic co-experiencing of the hero's life means to experience that life completely in a form compeltely different from the form from which it was, or could have been, experienced by the subiectum of that life himself. Co-experiencing in this form does not in the least strive toward the ultimate point of coinciding, merging with the co-experienced life...A sympathetically co-experienced life is given form not in the category of the I, but in the category of the other, as the life of another human being, another I...It is essentially experienced from outside.

[poem] 'Foreign' (quoted in parts by the above essay) from Selling Manhattan (1987) by Carol Ann Duffy:

Imagine living in a strange, dark city for twenty years.
There are some dismal dwellings on the east side
and one of them is yours. On the landing, you hear
your foreign accent echo down the stairs. You think
in a language of your own and talk in theirs.

Then you are writing home. The voice in your head
recites the letter in a local dialect; behind that
is the sound of your mother singing to you,
all that time ago, and now you do not know
why your eyes are watering and what's the word for this.

You use the public transport. Work. Sleep. Imagine one night
you saw a name for yourself sprayed in red
against a brick wall. A hate name. Red like blood.
It is snowing on the streets, under the neon lights,
as if this place were coming to bits before your eyes.

And in the delicatessen, from time to time, the coins
in your palm will not translate. Inarticulate,
because this is not home, you point at fruit. Imagine
that one of you says Me not know what these people mean.
It like they only go to bed and dream.
Imagine that.
